Wellesley Plate - Semi Finals
Saturday, 22nd July 2023
I'm pleased to report that the Nevill scratch team won their Wellesley Plate semi-final against Sweetwoods yesterday at Haywards Heath golf club in dreadful conditions.
Our team was 3-1 up after the mornings foursomes, but struggled in the heavy rain and strong winds in the afternoons singles matches. The match finished tied at 6-6, so went to a sudden death play-off. Obviously, we put forward the current ‘Sussex Amateur Champion’ James Whyte. He didn’t disappoint, rolling in a decisive 20 foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to win the play-off and secure our spot in the Wellesley Plate final. It was a great all round team performance with every single player contributing at least one point.
This year the team spirit, squad size and therefore competition for places have all been greatly improved. We have definitely benefited from having our kit sponsorship from Chantler Kent Investments and money raised from the inaugural Nevill Am-Am, which goes towards funding golf balls, tees and match day practice costs for all the players.
So far this season we have really got our foursomes pairings right, only losing 1/6 morning sessions in 2023. We have actually scored 20 points from a possible 24 in our foursomes! To only drop 4 points in the most difficult format of golf, is very impressive and has been key to our victories.
Hopefully we can go one step further by winning the Plate final on Saturday 19th August at Worthing GC, against Haywards Heath. It would be great if the members could come down to spectate or even volunteer to caddy, I know that it would mean a lot to the team to have the support from the Nevill membership.
